They say you can always judge a man by his shoes. Lies. You can judge a man or woman by his or her sword.
In our first installment of a new series, we look at the sword’s evolving role in battle and it’s less evolving role in society. We also practice our Greek and Latin (again) with mixed results (again). I think we nailed the Japanese, though.
We spent 2011 painstakingly researching the cultures and wars that shaped the knight and samurai in order to give you an hour of solid entertainment. It would take us longer to list all of the topics we cover in the episode than the actual running time. (I’m not sure how that’s mathematically possible, but it’s true.) We even manage to squeeze in some Roman history, if Spartacus: Blood and Sand counts as history.

In part 2 of our review of HBO’s Game of Thrones, we continue with our picks for best and worst scenes. We also give our general impressions and predictions, and we share our tips on how to add a little Westeros to your fantasy game.
Despite Richard Madden having a bit of a fan club in Japan, we still don’t mention Robb Stark. (Don’t get your hopes up, Mr. Madden; they’re all dudes.)
